OVERVIEW

of the project

The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program has teamed up with the Sand County Foundation to help you restore wildlife habitat on your land. This voluntary program works with private landowners one-on-one to restore wildlife habitat on working farms, forests and recreation land as a part of an effort to promote the habitat of the Karner blue butterfly and other wildlife.

THE KARNER BUTTERFLY

Wisconsin has the largest populations of Karner blue butterflies in the world. Unfortunately, this amazing butterfly is becoming extremely rare. We want to work with you to help this amazing creature and others that may follow in its path.

REAL STORIES

from our partners

A BLANK CANVAS

for prairie restoration

FROM BARE TO BEAUTIFUL

Franz from Waushara County decided to restore his land. After meeting with a biologist once, he decided to expand the acreage on the agreement to include more of his property. Areas like this are ideally suited for the prairie management plan.

This will be best for the area and will have a more positive impact on the environment."

THE PROCESS

of prairie management

INITIAL CONFERENCE

A biologist will listen to the description of and goals for your land. Suggestions for wildlife habitat improvements will be made. If agreeable, a site visit will be scheduled.

THE FIRST VISIT

During a site visit, plants and animals are identified and a more detailed discussion of the proposed restoration and protection usually occurs around the kitchen table.

A MANAGEMENT PLAN

After carefully listening to you and visiting the land, the biologist will develop a management plan to accomplish the agreed upon habitat improvements.

THE FOLLOW-THROUGH

The biologist will continue to work with you to implement the plan, hire contractors, purchase materials, and monitor the success of the restoration. Dollar for dollar cost share is sought on a project by project basis. Up to 100% financial assistance may be available.

A TYPICAL PLAN

for prairie restoration

"The biologist has been invaluable in creating a prarie management plan."
